The Burr That Became Velcro

In the summer of 1941, a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral went for a hike in the Alps with his dog. When he got home, he found his trousers and his dog's fur covered in burrs — the small, spiky seed cases of a burdock plant that had latched on during the walk. Most people pull them off and forget about it. De Mestral pulled them off and reached for a microscope.

Under the microscope, the burrs revealed something remarkable: hundreds of tiny curved hooks, each shaped perfectly to catch and hold loops of fabric or animal hair. The hooks were simple. They were strong. And when you pulled the burr free, the hooks released cleanly — ready to latch on again. De Mestral immediately saw the potential. Here was a fastening system that had been refined over millions of years of evolution, designed to do one thing exceptionally well: attach.

Turning the observation into a working product was far harder than spotting the idea. De Mestral spent years collaborating with textile engineers to recreate the hook-and-loop system using nylon — a synthetic material durable enough to survive thousands of attachment and detachment cycles without breaking down. Getting the hooks to exactly the right shape, and the loops to exactly the right density, required constant experiment and failure. After years of setbacks, he finally received a patent in 1955. He named the product Velcro — a combination of the French words velours, meaning velvet, and crochet, meaning hook.

The fashion industry was not interested. Velcro was considered bulky and imprecise — not the kind of thing you put on a tailored jacket or a fine shoe. But NASA had a completely different reaction. In the early days of space exploration, astronauts needed ways to secure equipment inside spacecraft where even a small object floating free could cause serious problems. Velcro was perfect: lightweight, reliable, and functional in zero gravity. Once NASA adopted it publicly, the image of Velcro changed overnight.

Today Velcro appears on shoes, jackets, bags, medical equipment, and children's clothing all over the world. It is so common that most people never pause to think about where it came from — a dog covered in burrs, a man with a microscope, and years of refusing to let go of an idea that nobody else thought was worth pursuing.
