The War That Was Over in 38 Minutes

Picture this. It is the morning of August 27, 1896. The sun is barely up over the Indian Ocean. British warships sit in the harbour of Zanzibar, their guns already aimed at the palace. Inside, a man named Khalid bin Barghash has declared himself sultan. He knows the British do not approve. He also knows he has an army. So he decides to fight. At 9:02 in the morning, the British open fire. At 9:40, it is over. The shortest war in recorded history has ended — and Khalid is already fleeing out the back door.

To understand why this happened, you need to understand one thing about Zanzibar in 1896: Britain had a great deal of interest in who sat on the throne. The island — now part of modern Tanzania — was a key trading port in East Africa. Under a protectorate arrangement, Britain expected the sultan to be someone they could work with. When the ruling sultan, Hamad bin Thuwaini, died suddenly on August 25, his cousin Khalid seized the palace and declared himself ruler — without asking anyone's permission. Britain had a different candidate in mind.

Britain issued an ultimatum: step down by 9 o'clock on the morning of August 27, or face the consequences. Khalid did not step down. He assembled what forces he had — around 2,800 men, one old royal yacht, a few artillery pieces, and a flag — and prepared to defend the palace. Britain had five warships, a clear line of fire, and the most powerful navy on Earth. The calculation was not complicated.

At 9:02 AM, British ships opened fire. The royal yacht was sunk within two minutes. The palace roof caught fire. Khalid's flag was shot down. He fled. By 9:40 AM, the guns had fallen silent. Depending on the source, the war lasted between 38 and 45 minutes. The shorter figure is the one history remembers.

Zanzibar's side suffered around 500 casualties. The British suffered exactly one: a sailor who was wounded. The palace lay in ruins. Khalid took shelter in the German consulate and eventually escaped to German East Africa, where he lived in exile for years. Britain installed their preferred sultan, and the protectorate continued as before. The whole episode had lasted less time than a lunch break.

The 38-minute war is often treated as a curiosity — a fun fact to mention at dinner. But it points to something larger. In the age of colonialism, many 'wars' were not really wars at all. They were demonstrations. A show of force so overwhelming that resistance was never meant to succeed. Khalid's forces were not poorly trained or cowardly. They simply had no chance. The outcome was decided before the first shot was fired. The 38 minutes were just the time it took to make the point official.

History books are full of wars that lasted years, decades, even centuries. The Anglo-Zanzibar War lasted a single morning — and it may tell us more about power and empire than many of the longer ones.
