Sea Otters Hold Hands While They Sleep

Picture the surface of the Pacific Ocean at night. It is cold. The water moves. And if you are a sea otter, there is a real problem: if you fall asleep, you might drift away from the others. Sea otters sleep floating on their backs, out in the open ocean. They do not come ashore. They do not anchor themselves to the seafloor. So they found a solution. They hold hands.

A group of resting sea otters is called a raft. It is a fitting name — they look like a loose, floating collection of small furry bodies, drifting gently on the swell. A raft can contain anywhere from a handful of otters to over a thousand, though groups of ten to a hundred are more common. They gather near beds of giant kelp — the towering underwater seaweed that grows along the Pacific coast of North America. Some otters go a step further and wrap themselves in strands of kelp to anchor themselves in place while they sleep, so the current cannot carry them off even if they let go.

The hand-holding is not purely mechanical. Otters do not simply grab the nearest available paw. They show clear preferences, often holding hands with the same partners again and again. Mothers and their pups have the closest bond: a mother holds her pup on her chest while she floats, grooming its fur to keep it warm and waterproof, or simply hugging it against the movement of the sea. If the pup drifts slightly, the mother pulls it back without waking up.

Sea otters face a challenge that most marine mammals do not. Whales and seals stay warm through thick layers of blubber beneath their skin. Sea otters have almost none. Instead, they rely entirely on their fur — the densest fur of any animal on Earth, with up to one million hairs packed into a single square inch. To stay warm, that fur needs to trap air. To trap air, it needs to stay clean and dry. This is why otters spend a large portion of every day grooming — not for vanity, but because a matted, dirty coat means a cold, wet body, which in the frigid Pacific means death.

Sea otters were once hunted to near extinction for that very fur — the same dense, beautiful coat that keeps them alive. By the early twentieth century, fewer than 2,000 were thought to survive worldwide. Conservation efforts have since brought numbers back, but the southern sea otter population along the California coast still numbers only in the low thousands and remains listed as threatened.

They also play a critical role in their ecosystem. Otters eat sea urchins. Sea urchins eat kelp. Without otters, urchin populations explode, kelp forests collapse, and an entire coastal ecosystem unravels. In a way, the sea otter holds the whole coast together — which is perhaps fitting for an animal that holds its loved ones close so they do not drift away.

So when you picture two sea otters floating quietly on the ocean, paws linked so neither drifts away — you are looking at something practical and tender at the same time. In the cold Pacific, warmth has to be made. They make it together.
