Oxford University Is Older Than the Aztec Empire

The Aztec Empire is often imagined as an ancient civilization from the distant past. Oxford University, on the other hand, might seem like a modern institution by comparison. But the numbers tell a very different story. Teaching at Oxford began around 1096 AD, while the Aztec Empire was not founded until 1428 AD — more than 300 years later.

Oxford does not have a precise founding date. Instead, it grew gradually. Evidence of teaching at Oxford dates back to 1096, though the university began to develop rapidly after 1167, when King Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. Suddenly, scholars who had been studying in France returned to Oxford, and the town quickly became a center of learning.

By the 13th century, Oxford had colleges, libraries, and a large community of students and teachers. It was already a well-established institution long before the Aztec Empire ever existed.

The Aztec Empire is traditionally said to have been founded in 1428, when three city-states — Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan — formed an alliance known as the Triple Alliance. From there, the empire expanded rapidly, eventually controlling much of central Mexico.

At its height, the Aztec Empire was an extraordinary civilization — with advanced agriculture, astronomy, architecture, and a complex social structure. Its capital, Tenochtitlan, had a population estimated at over 200,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in the world at the time.

To understand just how long ago Oxford began, consider what was happening in the world around 1096. The First Crusade had just been launched. William the Conqueror had died only nine years earlier. The Magna Carta — one of the most important legal documents in history — would not be signed for another 119 years.

In the Americas, the Aztec civilization as we know it did not yet exist. The peoples of central Mexico were organized into smaller competing groups. The grand empire that would later build Tenochtitlan was still more than three centuries away.

The Aztec Empire fell to Spanish conquistadors in 1521, lasting less than 100 years. Oxford University, meanwhile, has continued operating for over 900 years without interruption, making it one of the oldest and most continuously operating universities in the world.

History has a way of surprising us. The institutions we assume are modern sometimes have roots stretching back to a world that feels almost unimaginably remote. Oxford is a reminder that knowledge — when carefully tended — can outlast even the mightiest of empires.
