Lightning Is Five Times Hotter Than the Surface of the Sun

The surface of the Sun burns at roughly 5,500 degrees Celsius — hot enough to vaporise most materials on Earth without even making contact. And yet a bolt of lightning, splitting the sky above your head in a fraction of a second, reaches temperatures of around 30,000 degrees Celsius. About five times hotter. The Sun, for all its scale and power, is actually the cooler of the two.

Lightning is not fire, and it is not electricity in the way that flows through a phone charger. It is plasma — the fourth state of matter, beyond solid, liquid, and gas. When electrical charge builds up between storm clouds and the ground below, the air between them is pushed to its limit. Eventually, a narrow channel punches through, and for a tiny fraction of a second, millions of volts discharge along a path roughly as wide as a thumb. The air inside that channel is heated so violently and so instantly that it briefly becomes a strip of plasma — hotter than almost anything else in nature.

The extreme heat comes from the extreme speed. The discharge happens in microseconds — far faster than any controlled burning process. In that instant, the molecules in the lightning channel are accelerated and collide so violently that they release enormous amounts of thermal energy. It is less like fire and more like a detonation of heat, contained within a narrow corridor. The temperature spikes to around 30,000 degrees and then vanishes almost immediately. The channel lasts only a fraction of a second before the electricity dissipates and the air cools again.

Thunder is not a separate event from lightning. It is its direct consequence. When the lightning channel heats the air to 30,000 degrees in a microsecond, the surrounding air is forced to expand outward at tremendous speed — faster than sound itself. That rapid expansion creates a shockwave, and that shockwave is what reaches your ears as a thunderclap. The long rumble that follows is the same shockwave arriving from different points along the entire length of the bolt. The closer the strike, the sharper and louder the crack.

You see the flash before you hear the thunder because light travels almost instantaneously and sound does not. But both are caused by the same event — a sliver of air, no wider than your thumb, briefly reaching temperatures five times hotter than the surface of the Sun. Something that ordinary storms are capable of producing, anywhere in the world, on any afternoon.
