The Jellyfish That Can Cheat Death

There is a creature in the ocean that appears to have solved the problem of death. It is smaller than your fingernail. It has no brain, no heart, and no eyes. And under the right conditions, it can reverse its own ageing — turning back the biological clock and restarting its life cycle from the very beginning. Its name is Turritopsis dohrnii. Scientists call it the immortal jellyfish.

Most living things age in one direction: from young to old. Turritopsis dohrnii can go the other way. When this jellyfish is stressed, injured, or simply old, it can reabsorb its own body and revert to an earlier stage — a tiny blob attached to a surface, called a polyp. From the polyp, it then grows back into a fully formed jellyfish and begins its life again. This biological trick is called transdifferentiation: the ability of the animal's cells to transform from one type into another, essentially resetting the organism from the inside out. It is vanishingly rare in nature.

The word immortal needs a small asterisk. Turritopsis dohrnii can only restart its life cycle when it chooses to — predators, disease, and simple bad luck do not care about biological tricks. In the wild, most individuals do not survive especially long. What the jellyfish has is a kind of biological escape hatch: under the right circumstances, it can avoid death by becoming young again. Whether it can repeat this process an unlimited number of times remains difficult to prove, and the jellyfish itself is too small and fragile to study easily in a laboratory.

Turritopsis dohrnii was first identified in the Mediterranean Sea, but today it has been found in oceans across the globe. Scientists believe it spread by hitching rides in the ballast water of cargo ships — water taken on board in one port and released in another. Because the jellyfish is so small and resilient, it established itself in new environments with remarkable ease. It is now considered an invasive species in many regions, though its full impact on local marine ecosystems is not yet well understood.

Researchers study Turritopsis dohrnii with growing interest, because transdifferentiation — the ability to change one cell type into another — could hold important clues for medicine, particularly in understanding ageing and tissue regeneration. Whether the immortal jellyfish will ever teach us how to live longer remains to be seen. For now, it drifts through the world's oceans, smaller than a coin, quietly doing something no other animal on Earth has fully managed: choosing, when the moment demands it, to simply start over.
