Honeybees Can Recognise Human Faces

Have you ever looked at a bee and thought: that creature has no idea who I am? You might want to reconsider. Researchers have discovered that honeybees can be trained to recognise individual human faces, telling one person apart from another with surprising accuracy. This is not a trick of instinct. It is genuine learning — carried out by a brain that weighs less than a milligram.

The experiment was straightforward. Researchers presented bees with photographs of human faces. When a bee landed on or approached one specific face, it received a drop of sugar water as a reward. Other faces offered nothing. Over time, the bees learned to reliably fly toward the rewarded face, even when the photos were rearranged or shown in a new order. When tested days later with no reward present at all, many bees still chose the correct face. They had remembered it.

What makes this especially interesting is how bees appear to process faces. Humans recognise faces holistically — we take in the whole arrangement at once, rather than adding up individual features one by one. This is why an upside-down face is so much harder to recognise than an upside-down chair. When researchers tested bees with inverted photographs, they too struggled. They were not memorising the position of eyes or the shape of a nose in isolation. They were reading the whole face, in the same way we do.

For a long time, scientists assumed that face recognition required a large and complex brain — the kind that only primates and a few other highly intelligent animals possess. Honeybees challenge that assumption entirely. Their brains are minuscule, yet they achieve something that even engineers find difficult to replicate in artificial systems. The discovery suggests that the brain's size matters far less than how it is organised. A small number of neurons, wired in the right way, may be capable of more than we ever imagined.
