The Great Pyramid Was the World's Tallest Structure for 3,800 Years

Think about the tallest building you have ever stood beside. Think about how long it has existed — perhaps a few decades, perhaps a century. Now consider this: the Great Pyramid of Giza held the record as the tallest structure on Earth for approximately 3,800 years. It was completed around 2560 BCE, and it was not surpassed until 1311 CE, when a cathedral in Lincoln, England, finally edged past it. Nearly four thousand years at the top.

The pyramid was built for Pharaoh Khufu, and when complete, it stood roughly 146.5 metres tall. It uses approximately 2.3 million stone blocks, each weighing between 2.5 and 15 tonnes. The precision is staggering even by modern standards. The base is level to within just 2.1 centimetres across its entire footprint. The four sides are aligned to the cardinal directions — north, south, east, and west — with an accuracy of less than four minutes of arc. All of this was achieved without cranes, without power tools, without any machinery we would recognise today.

The structure that ended the pyramid's record was Lincoln Cathedral in England, completed in 1311 CE. At roughly 160 metres, it edged past the pyramid — though partly because the pyramid itself had shrunk. The smooth white limestone casing stones that once covered the outside, giving it a gleaming surface visible from miles away, had been gradually stripped away during the Middle Ages. They were reused as building material across Cairo. What remains today is the rougher inner core, several metres shorter than the original.

To feel the true scale of 3,800 years, consider the timeline. The pyramid was already over a thousand years old when ancient Greece was at its peak. It was over 2,500 years old when the Roman Empire was at the height of its power. By the time the first universities opened in Europe, it was already ancient history. Shakespeare wrote Hamlet while the pyramid still held the record. And through all of it — through the rise and fall of empires, through plagues and centuries of change — the Great Pyramid stood in the desert, unchanged, the tallest thing humanity had ever built.

The modern world builds and tears down at a pace the ancient Egyptians could never have imagined. A skyscraper rises in a year and is outdated within a generation. But the Great Pyramid had a different relationship with time — one measured not in years or decades, but in centuries. It outlasted every civilisation that tried to surpass it. And even now, stripped of its outer casing and a few metres shorter, it still stands at Giza, older than almost anything else made by human hands.
