Cows Have Best Friends — and Suffer When Separated

Cows are not usually the animal that comes to mind when you think about deep social bonds. But researchers studying cattle behaviour have found something that is difficult to explain away: cows form preferential relationships with specific individuals, spending more time near them, showing lower stress levels in their presence, and displaying signs of distress when those companions are removed. Whether you call it friendship or something else, the pattern is consistent and measurable.

In research conducted at the University of Northampton, cows were paired with either their preferred companion or a cow they had shown no particular preference for. While solving a mild cognitive task, the cows paired with their preferred partner had measurably lower heart rates. Those paired with a less familiar animal showed higher stress levels throughout the test. The researchers were not looking for friendship — they were studying stress responses in farming conditions — but the data pointed in an unexpected direction. The identity of the companion mattered enormously.

Cows in herds do not simply exist alongside one another — they form social hierarchies, maintain long-term relationships, and show consistent preferences. Individual cows will repeatedly choose to spend time near the same small group of animals, day after day. When herd members are suddenly separated — as often happens during farming operations — the remaining animals show elevated cortisol levels and restless behaviour that can persist for hours. The disruption is not simply about losing a body nearby. It appears to be about losing a specific individual.

The findings have practical implications for animal welfare — keeping bonded pairs together during transport or housing changes reduces stress and improves outcomes for the animals. But they also carry a broader significance. For a long time, the capacity for meaningful social bonds was assumed to require a certain level of intelligence — the kind associated with primates, dolphins, or elephants. Cattle are not typically placed in that category. Their bonds challenge the assumption that complex emotional connections are reserved for animals we already consider to be intelligent.

The cow standing quietly in a field is not simply eating grass and waiting. She likely knows exactly which of the animals around her she trusts most — and would notice immediately if that animal were gone.
