Cleopatra Lived Closer in Time to the Moon Landing Than to the Pyramids

When we think of ancient Egypt, the pyramids and Cleopatra tend to come to mind together. They both feel like distant history — part of the same ancient world. But there is a startling gap between them. Cleopatra lived closer in time to the Moon landing in 1969 than to the construction of the Great Pyramid.

The Great Pyramid of Giza was completed around 2560 BC. Cleopatra VII, the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt, was born around 69 BC and died in 30 BC. That means roughly 2,500 years passed between the construction of the pyramid and Cleopatra's lifetime. By contrast, only about 2,000 years passed between Cleopatra's death and the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969.

Cleopatra was, in a sense, more of a contemporary of Julius Caesar, Shakespeare, and even the first smartphones than she was of the pyramid builders. The ancient world lasted far longer than most people imagine.

The human brain tends to group distant historical events together. To many people, "ancient" simply means "a very long time ago," so the pyramids, Cleopatra, and ancient Rome all feel equally distant. But ancient history spans thousands of years, and the differences in time between those events are enormous.

The pyramids were already ancient ruins — over two thousand years old — when Cleopatra walked among them. Tourists in Cleopatra's time would visit the pyramids much as tourists do today, marveling at monuments left by people who had lived impossibly long ago.

This fact is more than just an interesting number. It reveals how easily our sense of time can mislead us. History is not a flat landscape where everything old is equally distant. It is a deep timeline, and the further back you go, the more the gaps between events can astonish you.
