Bananas Are Berries. Strawberries Are Not.

If you asked most people to name a berry, they would probably say strawberry, raspberry, or blueberry. Very few would say banana. But according to botanists — scientists who study plants — bananas are true berries, and strawberries are not.

In everyday language, a berry is any small, round, juicy fruit. But in botany, the definition is far more precise. A true berry is a fruit that develops from a single flower with one ovary, and the seeds are enclosed within the fleshy part of the fruit. By this definition, bananas, grapes, kiwis, tomatoes, and even avocados are all berries.

A banana fits this definition perfectly. It develops from a single flower, has one ovary, and the seeds — though nearly invisible in modern cultivated bananas — are embedded within the flesh. The seeds have been almost entirely bred out of commercial bananas over centuries of cultivation, but they were once much larger.

A strawberry is technically not a berry at all. It is what botanists call an "accessory fruit" or a "false fruit." The red fleshy part we eat is not the ovary — it is the enlarged base of the flower. The true fruits of a strawberry are actually the tiny yellow specks dotting the surface, each containing a small seed inside.

Similarly, raspberries and blackberries — despite having "berry" in their names — are not true berries either. They are aggregate fruits, formed from flowers that have multiple ovaries. Each small round segment of a raspberry is actually a separate tiny fruit.

The gap between common names and botanical definitions exists because people named fruits long before scientists developed precise classifications. Everyday language reflects what things look and taste like, while botanical language reflects how they grow and which plant structures they come from. Neither is wrong — they simply describe different things.

So the next time you eat a banana, you can honestly say you are eating a berry. And the next time someone puts strawberries in a fruit salad, you are technically free to correct them.
